Can this be fixed........

....... Or have I bought the wrong router?

I currently get my broadband through my BT line and I bought Netgear WGR614 router. I thought it was an ADSL router as it said Cable/DSL, but I'm unable to set it up...

Have I got it all wrong?

(Feel free to kick me....!)

    From Netgear website:
NETGEAR's WGR614 Wireless Router lets you conveniently share your cable (or ADSL) Internet connection, files and printing facilities with all the computers on your home or small office network.

    Very misleading I think.
  • If your current modem has an ethernet connection you would be able to use it with the Netgear WGR614. Its just a router which will work with cable or adsl as long as you have a compatible modem.
Otherwise as ormus has mentioned the dg834g will do as its a combined adsl modem/router.

I bought it off ebay. Am I able to buy a modem with an ethernet connection?
  • What kind of modem do you already have?
You can buy modems with ethernet connections but you may well be as cheap getting a modem/router combined - http://www.dsldepot.co.uk/ - £16 inc p&p for a speedtouch 756v5 wireless router/modem. End of line stuff but good gear, bought stuff from them myself.
To be honest though having two devices where one will do the job is just an added complication - thought it might save the day if your current modem has the ethernet connection required.

almost all the modems i can think off supplied free by the bt line isp,s are usb type.
i just would not bother trying to get an ethernet modem to go with the wgr614.
(and the netgear site does say you will need an ethernet modem for adsl, further down the page).

  • The modem we use at work is a d-link 320t, ethernet connection, and would do the job with your netgear.
A couple of options there for you so sure you can work out the cheapest/most viable which suits.
