I know this is a bit of a long shot, but hopefully there will be some BBQ afficianados on here! Please excuse the lack of photos.

We have a large concrete BBQ in the back garden. A part has cracked and I have no experience of maintaining them/no idea if I'm even using the blimmin' thing right!

The BBQ surround is essentially a large box with a chimney (like an outdoor pizza oven, but smaller). Looks very similar to this.

The base of the "box" is lined with heatproof tiles. On top of the tiles sit two large blocks (I'm assuming these are heatproof concrete or the like). They look very similar to the base of this barbecue and basically cover the whole base (small gap at each side). The top of the blocks feature a groove at the side and a very heavy cast iron grille (a barbecue grate?) sits on top of these. One of these blocks has now cracked at the corner.

I believed that the purpose of this grille was a place to pile your charcoal, with ash etc. falling through the gaps as the charcoal burns down? Is this correct?

1) What would the proper name be for the blocks?
2) If I can't replace them (they seem to fit the grille specifically), can I place the charcoal directly onto the tiles?
3) FIL suggested creating a mould and pouring a new one out of heatproof concrete, but I have no idea what he is talking about and Google hasn't helped :o
