First Direct - renewal price beater question

just done a quote and i put my renewal premium as £100.00 lower than the one i received. anyway i have done the quote, upped the milage and they still beat my figure by £30.
on the quote form it says i may need to show my renewal quote as evidence, but on the PDF quote which i could sign, it bears no mention of submitting the renewal.
my question - do they check renewal premiums or not?
