New kitchen or appliances?

Hi,

My fridge is not in great condition and I need a dishwasher and a new washing machine. And I am planning on getting my kitchen re-done next year.

My sister's advice is to do the kitchen and the replace all the appliances in one go and do it now. Will it be cheaper to do it that way? Do they do deals when you do the kitchen? Or do I just go ahead and get the appliances and worry about the kitchen when I have the cash for it?

I'd always advice to shop about for appliances as you get a far better choice and often a better deal than being constrained to the kitchen supplier. ;)

Definitely shop around for appliances. You pay top prices for those supplied by any of the shops & stores selling new kitchens & you don't get the same vast choice either.

By shopping around carefully, you could save up to 50% by buying in your appliances, taps, & even unit handles seperately.

Don't forget to check out Ebay, as you can pick up some brilliant buys there.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

Sorry to hijack this thread! :D

Is the above true? has anyone else furnished their kitchen from ebay? i'm wondering because i'm currently looking at either ebay or ikea - i can only shop with companies of four letters or less! :rotfl:

so, any ebay kitchens out there?

  • just to add, when we got our new kitchen done (approx 2 months ago), our kitchen supplier quoted for new induction hob, fridge, dishwasher and microwave. I got the model numbers and did a search on the internet, and the prices they quoted where roughly the same as internet prices (some things where about £10 cheaper on the internet, but the hassle if there was any problems wasnt worth £10).

It depends entirely on the kitchen company. Some do good deals on appliances, some don't. Some will also pretend to give you good deals on the appliances, whilst adding a bit extra to the kitchen unit price (you've no way of knowing for sure).

If you buy your appliances separately, then you know you're getting the best deal available at the time. You may get an even better deal by buying them from one place - it's always worth asking for a better price if you're buying more than one item.

On the down side, if you buy your appliances first, it may restrict the design of the kitchen. If you do the whole lot at once, then you can re-think everything. You might, for instance, choose a built in oven and separate hob, instead of a free standing cooker, or a separate fridge and freezer instead of a fridge-freezer (or vice versa).

It might be worth getting a couple of designs, as if you were planning a whole new kitchen. Just to see if your current types of appliance are the right ones for the new design. If they are, then you can go ahead and buy them separately. If not then just buy the ones that are and keep saving for the kitchen.

You will ocassionally get very good deals on appliances with a new kitchen - but you need to take the whole price into account - not just the quoted appliance prices.

As for e-bay kitchens. Yes, there are some good deals to be had. If you can arrange collection and fitting yourself, and are happy to work out a new layout for your room, then there are some good quality second hand kitchens. There are also kitchen companies selling on e-bay - don't know what the quality is like though.
