Dehumidifier and fan

Hi

The previous owners of my house left an extractor fan on a timer in the basement, but I spotted some mould so I’ve bought a dehumidifier. But should I keep the extractor fan on timer, or is it just creating more work from the dehumidifier?

Also someone recommended a heat exchange unit would improve the air quality, should I consider getting one fitted?

I'd turn the extractor off, you're right that it creates more work for the demudiifier.
It might affect the air flow for the whole house, so you might want to check where the drafts are going. If a draft is coming up from the basement, turn the extractor back on. You don't want the air from there coming up into the house if you've got mould.

I don't know how a heat exchanger would improve air quality?

Try an ebac dehumidifier, I've had good results with a couple of houses, without basement s though.

You need ventilation down there also, once the mould has been cleared try leaving the access to the basement open with the extractor on for a few hours per day with dehumidifier off. This will draw fresh air into the basement.

Then put dehumidifier on with basement closed and extractor off. The Ebac switch s off when the humidity is low enough.
