Flavour shakers aren't nearly as good as a pestle and mortar, but I will say I find mine useful for making viniagrette (sp?) or marinades that contain a lot of oil. If you use it the right way, turning it upside down etc it seems to do these quite well and the main benefit is that the liquid stays inside it.
For dry stuff though I'll always use a P & M.
I will say their customer service is excellent - the sealing ring on mine got lost and I called them up and they sent out three spare ones that arrived two days later.:T0
