I just think if you are going to use a TLA that isn't widely recognised then you should spell it out the first time you use it.

It's only an acronym if it's pronounced "mib", rhyming with bib. If it's pronounced "M.I.B." then it's an initialism.
Acronyms are initialisms that are pronounced as words, such as PIN, RADAR, etc. Things like BBC, ITV and LP are initialisms.0 -

Exactly. And for that reason TLA stands for Three Letter Abbreviation, not Acronym.0 -
