    What’s the deal?

Well, I can say from my experience this is an excellent service - it is completely confidential which I like, and runs on a secuure ssl server so all details are safe and secure. And you get direct replies from lawyers on your enquiry, in less than 24 hours!
I rate it 10/10 - also it is on the Good Web Guide with a 5 star rating - see this link http://www.thegoodwebguide.co.uk/index.php?rid=4596

The other great thing is that it is free and fast, rather than trawl companies from yellow pages, now you can save money, time and stress, and with its comparison service you can get the best deal! :money:

When i needed a solicitor in the Manchester area i tried the following site, which dealt with my needs; number one being that it was a local solicitor i needed!!

    www.SolicitorsInManchester.co.uk
  • I've worked in various legal firms and know of some quotation tricks used.

Check that the quote given covers all eventualities. Often the really cheap quotes don't, so if something goes wrong with your move/divorce or whatever the solicitors hourly rate will kick in on top of the quoted price and you could end up spending thousands more than anticipated.

A good site for searching for a solicitor is www.solicitors.co.uk. Firms only have to pay for priority listings, so every firm in the country (theoretically) should be listed on there.

In defence of divorce solicitors I would have to say that it is VERY difficult to give a quote as the costs at the end of the day rely on how well the parties deal with the case. If your opponent decides to be as awkward as possible and has to be pursued to answer correspondence and complete documentation then costs quickly escalate. No solicitor can foresee this at the beginning of the case, but they should give you up-dates as the matter progresses.

    haha
  • This website is total :spam: :spam::spam::spam::spam::spam::spam::spam:

It is not free if the firms have to pay to be on there

The firms posting in open forums don't seem to be any of the larger ones.

Also if you search for the main law firms such as eversheds that has news (re: employment legislation) on the other end of the website they are not listed as a member in the site.

This is nothing less than a claims management company and ambulance chasers. Websites like this have enough money to pay celebs to promote them.

Please dont support them they are operating for a profit out of your expense. The best way to find a lawyer is to do it the old fashioned way of checking them out in your local town (walk past their office and walk inside) or a reccomendation from a friend. Or you can goooogle them and check each of their websites out all for free.

Well I have had 4 responses in 24 hours, all from reasonably local firms but only one has quoted an estimated price - and that was higher than I have already been quoted from a solicitor I had approached myself. The others don't even give an hourly rate!

So far I am not impressed :(

As a practising solicitor myself (yes, contrary to popular opinion we don't all have a money printing machine, and some of us need the support of MSE to get our finances in check :cheesy: ) I wholeheartedly endorse the sentiments of barginhunter, particularly about asking friends and/or family. They will be able to give you the best guide as to prices and the level of service you can expect from a particular firm.

BUT I would take what people say with a small grain of salt in circumstances where the matter they were involved in was a particularly contentious one eg. divorce, child custody, criminal matters. From experience, even when I known that I've achieved the best possible outcome for my client in the circumstances of the matter, some clients will not be satisfied because they didn't get everything they wanted/expected/thought they were entitled too.

As a corollary to that, can I ask a favour on behalf of all the other solicitors out there. If you are happy with the service you have received from your solicitor, please let them know. It is a job where we have to deal with some of the worst aspects of our 'civilised society' every day, and it can be pretty soul-crushing. It is amazing how much your day brightens when a client smiles at you and says 'Thanks.'

  • There are a new set of regulations from the Solicitors Regulation Authority which require law firms to provide full quotations and costs information to clients before work can be charged.

In the law firm I work for, in the initial call we outline hourly rates for the type of work which the caller needs advice for. Then Terms of Business are sent out for the new client to read and approve. Only then will advice be able to be provided, and even to start with it should be preliminary advice as a letter which we refer to as 'the Rule 2 letter' needs to go to a client. It outlines the basis on which we will act, our quote and costs information, who will do the work and at what hourly rates, any money laundering checks etc. You should expect something similar with any law firm.

All law firms must give proper quotes before starting to charge for the advice which they give. It will benefit you to make enquiries of a few law firms, do one letter and simply change the names and addresses, and see what comes back. All will at least reply, most should send you Terms of Business straight away. If you find that you are charged more than what you were quoted, you are entitled to complain and ask for your invoice to be reduced. You are also allowed to ask for weekly/monthly updates on how the costs are doing.

We bill monthly in our firm, but some firms will only bill at the end of the matter. It is sensible therefore to keep up to date with costs, and remember that each 'unit' charged is 6 minutes rounded up. So if you call to enquire every hour about something then you're going to rack up the costs. Try and be as precise as you can, and if possible do some of the admin stuff yourself, this can help keep costs low.

It can be difficult to give quotes for more complicated cases, and in these instances you should ask for a limit on the amount of chargeable work per month/week. For example, ask that if work is reaching the £500 mark could they give you a ring and let you know, and whether they think it will increase much more that week/month etc. Basically, keeping in touch with your solicitor on the question of your costs definitely helps.

    Hope this helps.

(Oh, and any website where a law firm has to pay to be on it is not going to give you the best law firms. The best law firms are always found in Chambers, law firms don't have to pay and Chambers do market research to find out how good law firms are, so its the most accurate if you want the best law firm. Legal 500 is a paying service also so isn't the best either.)
  • used the site a while ago for property sale/ purchase. got four replies two really good. the firm used did good job for fixed fee. useful site
