What’s the deal?

Often it’s hard to know whether you’re getting the best deal when it comes to legal services,; the good news is that now there’s a quick way to benchmark prices.

Now there's a commerical comparison service that may help. Takelegaldvice.com is a new free online legal services comparison service. Simply tell it what you want and it goes to 300 law firms for quotes for quotes.

I'm not suggesting you use one of the law firms suggested, more that it’s a useful tool to find out how much your solicitor costs compared with others. As this is new, its less a "great way to save money", more a "try it to see if it works for you."

How to compare prices

To grab some quotes, simply log on and choose your legal issue; this could be anything from a personal accident claim to getting divorced. You’ll then need to fill out a few details about yourself and the case.

Quotes from law firms should start coming back within 48 hours and, each time a solicitor responds, you’ll get an email; you have to log on to the site to see the quote. The website also includes law firm ratings, where past customers rate their experiences (think eBay feedback).

This is a new service, I need your view on whether it's good

This is a newish service, so if you’ve tried it out, it would be great to hear your views. How many law firms responded, and did the quotes vary wildly in price? I’d love to hear your feedback to see whether it should be come a recommendation.

Just tried out the site and it was easy to use. Had to put in a second choice location (another county) but as Martin said, I suppose you don't have to use any of the firms that reply. I'll let you know if I get any successful quotes.

One thing for people to check FIRST is if they have legal cover as part of their house insurance.

I needed a solicitor for a compensation claim and, on double checking my house insurance, found that on payment of a £30 excess I had cover for legal expenses.

Yes law firms do pay to participate - so you won't get any response from firms not paying to be in the scheme. Experience suggests that in some areas coverage is a bit thin so the number of worthwhile responses might be limited - i.e. some may be from outside the stated areas.

  • I work for a law firm and we were approached about appearing on takelegaladvice. Law firms have to pay to be listed and it is extremely expensive so it's not necessarily the greatest way of finding a lawyer as only the ones with a large advertising budget will be listed.

Also, the law firms listed choose which types of quotes they will respond to by the salary etc of the people requesting the quotes.

    Hope this helps.
  • When you have filled in all your details, this is what you get:

    Thank you.
Your details have been received and are being sent to appropriate law firms.
The firms will respond within 24-48 hours with how they propose to handle your case and an estimated cost. You will also be able to view a profile of the firm and any user ratings.
We will notify you by email each time a law firm responds to your case. You can log on to the site with your username and password at any time to view these responses. Simply click on the Log In link at the top right of the page and then click on the "Law Firm Responses", again top right of the page.

I have put in my enquiry and will let you know how it goes.
  • Have already had two replies, one not too far from where I live. I think one of the real positives about this is that they give you an approx cost... Try getting this out of a solicitor on the phone and they can be quite cagey I've found. Too busy to follow this up now but will post when I've done so.
  • I've also put in an enquiry about making a will. Just checked and have got 4 responses in 2 hours, 1 local, 2 sort of local, 1 at the other end of England...

OK I tried these a cuple of hours ago - so it is too soon to pass any judgements but I have had one response from a law firm arleady.

    Trouble is the response says

"Cost indication: Hourly rate: per hour
Additional cost info: Free initial 30 minute consultation at which fees would be agreed "

Now maybe this firm is missing the point - or maybe I am.
But that doesn't qualify as a quote and is NOT helpful in setting any benchmarks as far as I can see!

I will notify details of any further responses they send me.
