100 bottles of excellent wine would be a great return for all that money.

But seriously, not sure what youre looking for. Over what timeframe? How much certainty of the return do you need? Do you need x% year on year or can it drop 50% tomorrow and then rise 10000% in year 10?

Are you risk averse to something like bitcoin? Can you stomach investing in something that might lose all the capital but could double overnight? Is this an invest-and-forget or would you consider buying £100k worth of strawberries and making jam to sell with a 300% margin?

jam today or jam tomorrow :-)

Great questions, thank you... I personally would be risk adverse to something like bitcoin, only because of the downward spiral in recent times, it seems so volatile. I totally understand some people have made huge amounts by taking such risks.

I'd be willing to put it away as a longer term investment, wouldn't be looking to start up a business etc.

Out of interest, how would you suggest doubling it overnight? Not sure I would have the stomach for that!

If I knew somewhere that could double overnight, I wouldnt be sharing on here!

The whole reason why questions like this will rarely give you the answer you look for is that respondents dont know things like your age, if you need the money in 2 years or 20, if you never need the money, the state of your roof or boiler, other investments you might have, what sort of inheritance you want to leave your kids etc. Invariably time is the issue as 10 years might see some great equity investments, or trump might have instageted ww3 and gold should be your bet...

Whilst we do have a £180k mortgage, between my wife and I, we have £135,000 invested in the following:

    25% Vanguard FTSE global all-cap
    30% Vanguard life strategy 80
    15% Fidelity world index
    5% Fidelity emerging markets
    10% Vanguard global small-cap
    15% held back in cash

    - 3 funds that track indexes. Appreciate there's overlap I have a spreadsheet that tracks small cap/EM/bonds in total inc. funds), but aim is to keep within the £50k Financial services compensation scheme
    - small bond exposure from the VSL80 (will increase this when they're more attractive). That extra 5% cash is earmarked for bonds.
    - Fairly heavy on EM & Small-cap tilts, but we're invested for ~40 years.

Are they the best returns? Not necessarily. I could get better returns from value/momentum funds like Fundsmith equity.

I have no mortgage or loans (small amount stoozed at 0%) and a total of 96k so am in approximately this position.

30k is held in cash earning an average of 4.55%, 27k in SIPP s invested in VLS 100 acc, and the rest in ISAs, also in VLS 100.

I am considering adding some UK small caps and a greater % in Africa, but I think the seasoned posters on here will advise me not to tinker!

Age and stage of life is also a factor, as is what pension provision you already have.

I googled apple macdonalds. I don't think it will be much in 10 years...

Alan: Lynn, hand me an apple pie. And remove yourself from the theatre of conflict.
    Lynn: What do you mean?
Alan: Go and stand by the yakults. The temperature inside this apple turnover is 1,000 degrees. If I squeeze it, a jet of molten Bramley apple is going to squirt out. Could go your way, could go mine. Either way, one of us is going down.
