I think you'll be able to smell if it's past its best once you've opened it. If you're worried, an alternative use (so I'm told) is as a hair rinse. Apparently it makes hair very glossy (mmm, sounds like an advert for dog food - you might get bright eyes and a bushy tail too :rotfl: ). Never tried it myself, but worth a try to avoid the guilt of throwing it away?0

Thanks everyone for your replies, some really interesting ones there too -never thought of using it as a hair wash!! Well I opened a can and it seemed okay to me so I drank it and am fine.0

Hey all
I have half a crate of Carlsberg Lager bottles (275ml) which have a best before date of Sept 2009.
I'm not a big drinker so these could last me awhile! Is there a time I should drink them by? Or will they be ok say til Christmas?
TIA

Not that any booze lasts long enough round my house but I suspect that it will probably be still OK to drink. I don't hold much stock in best before dates TBH.I have a gift for enraging people, but if I ever bore you it'll be with a knife

Hi
I can confirm lager does go off.
I work for 'probably the best' brewer ( guess who... anyone ? lol). So to confirm any lager/beer does, You should if it has gone off see the colour change/ cloudy and maybe some murky spots ( kind of like mould), best sense is the nose though so if in doubt open it. If it smells sweet or vinegar it has definately gone off.
However saying that Sept 09 usually means the end of the month ( unless theres a day on it) and sometimes its ok for a couple weeks after or longer ( I am one for using it in cookingor partner trying it!) but as its a live product like milk each bottle/ can/brand is slightly different so trust your insticts really
if in doubt dont drink it.
Hope this helpsIf only closed minds came with closed mouths!

As a bitter drinker I doubt lager goes off so you could notice it, it is sterilised and not live yeast, so there should be nothing to actually "go off"
Having said that, many years ago I made home brew lager, and age certainly improved it, but then it was a live brew, not made in some vast stainless steel factory
I would drink it, it certainly will not kill youEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens0
