Cans of beer 4 months over best before

Hi, I'm new on here, looking forward to contributing.
Bit of a silly question, but does anyone know anything about beer? My dad has some cans that he is on the point of throwing away because they are 4 months past the best before date (found them at the back of the cupboard, he'd put them there and forgotten them!). It seems such a waste especially as I know he'll only go out and buy more!! I thought they'd probably be okay as it's only a best before but he seems quite determined that it will be off by now. What do people think? Any advice gratefully received! Thanks.

hi and welcome. I would stick one in the fridge then try it. If it tastes okay then I imagine it will be okay.0

my OH says the beer is very bad to drink beyond the useby date but he'll do you a favour and take it off your hands.. (!).. (yes i know, he had to try!)
on that basis.. i'd go with what bongedone said, try it. If it isn't good btw (it may just be a bit flat or something), then don't chuck it.. keep it - the flavour should still be okay for making beef in beer or something like that

4 month out of date beer will be perfectly ok health wise and is likely to have a best before date as opposed to a use by date indicating it is not perishable but may deteriorate taste wise. It will be fine. Dont throw good beer away
It has just brought back memories of my cousin who in 1993 split up with his then girlfriend. He alway had a spartan fridge with nothing in it apart from 4 cans of guiness.
That evening he swore that he would save the guiness to drink it as a celebration the next time he had sex.
Needless to say at a house party in 2001 another friend drank the guiness which by this time was more that 5 years out of date. :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
The beer was perfectly ok which is more than can be said for my cousins love life.
However he "broke his duck" in 2002 and is now happily married with children.0 -

My OH drinks out of date beer all the time (his friend's girlfrined works at a wine shop with less than perfect stock control). I really don't think there is a problem. He claims it gives him a worse hangover, but his problem is that, not having embraced moneysaving so well, he thinks that because it costs half as much, he can drink twice as many!
 If you don't want to drink it I'm sure you'll find no shortage of volunteers!0 -
The alcohol in the beer should preserve it and the linings of the tins today (if they need it) are much better than they used to be so I agree there should be no problems with the beer. On a logical basis, if the beer could 'go bad' so soon after the use by date, the manufacturers would run the risk of some 'going bad' before the use by date (unless they had a crystal ball telling them when it was going to happen) and then be open for prosecution.
Only proviso I would give is the same for any tin, check if it’s ‘blown, i.e. is it bowed out due to excess pressure inside. If not, open it and do the taste test. If it’s good drink, if it’s alright but past it’s best, cook with it and if it’s rubbish then dispose of it.:beer:Aiming for a Champagne Lifestyle on a Lemonade Budget

If it does taste xxxx you could always use it in the garden for killing slugs.
Get an old dish and half fill with the beer, the slugs go after the beer get drunk then fall in and drown.0
