Mastercard Verisign (?) when online shopping

Hello all,
Got a question, hoping you can help. I ordered something online a couple of days ago and after the "checkout" page, I was directed to a Mastercard Verisign page? I clicked "No Thanks" without really looking into what it is.
Can anyone explain what this is and if it's helpful/safe, etc?
Sorry to be dim.

I think it has something to do with this :

I had that done with my Visa card :

You've got the choice first, then or you register or you don't go through with your transaction.
On one of the website you will find a list of shops were mastercard securecode is in effect, check if you shopped with on of them.0 -
Thanks for explaining. I now have a place to read into what it all means. Still a bit unsure if I trust having a single code for all of these online shopping websites.
(I did mean SecureCode, but I couldn't remember the term. Probably why it didn't appear when I searched the forums or when I "Goggled" it.)
Thanks again

The problem is not whether you trust that particular security system, but it seems that at the end we won't have any say in it, and we will be forced to register without having a choice.
Then if any fraudulent transactions appears on your credit card, they might turn around and say that it's your fault if you didn't protect your password, and you might not have your money back. It seems that's where it's heading to. A shifting of responsibilities to you instead of the credit card lender or the retailer.0 -
I think we should all go back to trading in sheep, cows and daughters. We won't have all these issues. Unless someone cloned the sheep! Please continue to hold the line. Your call is very important to us and will be answered by next available robot...0
