Car insurance costs after fault accident
So people often ask if its worth claiming, what will my insurance go up by etc.
So 2 years ago.Mrs Custardy managed to reverse our 2008 Vectra into a wall on the rear OS quarter. minimal damage but enough to write it off due to the location of the damage.
Wall was undamaged.
Payout was around £2K,also had a windscreen claim 2 months before.
Insurance doubled to the £700 region fully comp with 9 years protected NCD & 1K business miles. The next year the insurance pretty much stayed at the same price even with shopping around.
This year insurance has dropped massively with quotes for paying Annually dropping under £300. Though current insurers AXA have upped the price on renewal and cant get anywhere near competitors.
So £2K payout and approx £700-£800 extra over the last 2 years.
So even over the next couple of years I would say 'up' on the insurance payout.
Thought it might help some with a real life example

My experience was very different. At fault damage was around £5K and the other party went for PI as well, don't know how much they got for that. My renewal was about £10 dearer and had very little subsequent effect.0

Just as well you had the protected NCD since it looks like the base premium doubled. Interesting that it dropped back after just two years.0

I have just had an at fault accident (I don't really have any memory of what happened as I had a migraine at the time but evidence suggests it was my fault) and been told my car (worth £7.5k) is a write off as it has £6k worth of damage. I don't know what state the other car is in. I had 12 years no claims, not protected (will be fixing that asap).
Anyone have any idea what kind of increase I might be looking at? I have a horrible suspicion costs on the other vehicle will be the same as or potentially more than my car. I'm assuming this is a 'how long is a piece of string' question and just redirecting every spare penny to this year's car insurance renewal envelope.
I would say you shouldn't be driving, hope you're never near me.0 -
We've had similar experiences with both car and home insurance.
Nearly 4k at fault car claim, insurance up on renewal but back to normal (shopping around) next time. Rise wasn't really that much either, don't think it was £100, but we had changed the car as well which will have influenced it.
Home insurance was quite a large claim, doubled year 1 renewal (£480) before returning to normal year 2.0 -

Hmmm you raise a good point. possibly us getting a new car influenced the renewal costs too. Still have the same car so likely a factor in dropping costs too.0
