Colleague is moving out of a property tomorrow and pays for electricity and gas on payment cards. Called Southern Electric and said she will be moving out of the property so wants her name removed from the account.
She was told to call back with readings - eh!! It's a pay as you go system and she explained this, but they still wnat readings - can anyone enlighten?
Also, they wanted to know who's name to put the account in - the landlord is selling the house and has asked that she doesn't put the bills into his name?? WHat should you say to the utility companies when they ask for a name?
Thanks

Tell the LL that the use of the house is passing from her to him & it's up to him to sort out, or just stick it down in his name without telling him."Mrs. Pench, you've won the car contest, would you like a triumph spitfire or 3000 in cash?" He smiled.
Mrs. Pench took the money. "What will you do with it all? Not that it's any of my business," he giggled.

Your friend could always tell them she has no idea who will be living there and that they should address all future correspondence to 'The Occupier'.↑ Things I wouldn't say to your face
↖Not my real name0 -
They need the readings because it is possible to use another card/key in your meter. Therefore someone else's account will be credited with the money, and the one you are using is in serious arrears.
I remember a few years ago people would buy electric cards from people for half of the face value. They thought that they were getting their electricity cheap.
They were stunned when the bill came and they were in arrears.Well life is harsh, hug me don't reject me.0 -
Even with a Pay-As-You-Go meter you can still get a reading... the PAYG meter will give a reading and is often tacked on AFTER the normal meter anyway. The cards don't actually "pay" for the electricity... it's when you BUY the cards you pay. It's really a budgeting system rather than a payment system.
Of course the exception to this is the old 50p gas meters!
And just stick the landlords name down and ignore him.Bankruptcy isn't the worst that can happen to you. The worst that can happen is your forced to live the rest of your life in abject poverty trying to repay the debts.0 -
You are the tenant who is leaving and the house then reverts back to the Landlord as he is the owner, just give his name and forget about it. If the house is empty surely no one will be using the electricity?Loretta0

Thanks guys.
Colleague says the landlord is lovely but rather 'dodgy'. She's always paid her rent in cash, there are no records ever of him living at the property, even though he did use to live there. But to be fair she says he's always been decent, fixing leaks etc.
Oh well...she's going now and as long as she's not liable for any outstanding bills, she'll be happy...and yes she did give his name to the utility companies:rotfl:!!!!!!0 -
In that case shop him to HMRC - tax evasion is theft from us all.

Make sure she gets her deposit back first though!"Mrs. Pench, you've won the car contest, would you like a triumph spitfire or 3000 in cash?" He smiled.

Hi Guy,
She wouldn't do that, he's been a good landlord..he may be declaring it, maybe just acts strange, and likes having lots of cash in his pockets.
It's his business what he wants to do with the rent, I'm sure if he's not declaring it, it will eventually catch up with him.
BTW..what does fig jam mean on your signature?0 -
F**k I'm Good, Just Ask Me
If he's avoiding paying tax, he's reducing the quality of the services you receive or he's increasing you tax bill. It may only be by a tiny amount, but when everyone that does this is added together it's a huge amount. Just like benefit fraud, in fact, if he's working like this there's a good chance he's getting away with that too, so he could be getting it from both ends.
If he's done nothing wrong HMRC won't do anything, if he's made a few !!!!-ups in his accounting that'll be no biggie, but if he's on the fiddle big time, well that should be stopped.
Reminds me of my old dealer, from when I was young & irresponsible. He was on the sick; dealt soft drugs & stolen goods; gave me a call one day asking if he could stay at mine for a couple of days, 'cause the council were going to be inspecting his girlfriend's place & he wasn't supposed to be there. Course at the time I didn't care, thinking that it didn't matter, now I pay tax on the other hand..."Mrs. Pench, you've won the car contest, would you like a triumph spitfire or 3000 in cash?" He smiled.
