We had to take the car in to them before (it is the nearest garage for our make of car) for some remedial repairs, and found their service really poor. When we tried to complain to the manufacturers that time, they said there was nothing they could do as the garages are essentially independent.

If you found the service poor the first time why did you go back ?

was it a full service ?

check washer level, oil level, brake pads, air filter etc etc.

What did the receipt say was done to the car ?

Check the list and see if it has been done.

Think yourself lucky I took my volvo S80 to franchised dealer and was charged £700 and the thing never ran properly again and the central locking and alarm was very unreliable following this "service".
I sold the volvo and bought a banger off Ebay for £675 and serviced it myself.

Common fault on S80's. Would yours be a pre 2001 model?

Volvo were known to be doing out of warranty warranty work on the door locks. Also the cooling fan can be replaced too as a freebie!
  • Also, why does everyone assume that things like air filters get changed at every service? They can be good for 50,000. According to manufactuers spec and also the cars living conditions. They could have checked it, deemed it to be ok for another 20,000 and moved on...

If the newspaper had been moved, you would have accused them of rummaging thru your belongings and havinga moan about that too!

How do you know the tyres weren't checked?!

As for the service indicator not being reset. Quite common.

    Jeez...

  • As you will see from the following, certain things are only checked at every other service etc...

(Just used Volvo for an example...)

after paying 600 smackers I'd expect the engine to come back steam cleaned and gold plated not to mention changing the £12 air filter

If it were me I would never have paid so much in the first place, but it's not me so, if I was there I'd look at the bill to see if it is itemised, if not then ask what was changed, then I'd check that thing to see if it is obviously old and not shiny and new. Spark plugs, air filter. oil filter, oil, any belts mentioned etc etc etc.

Whenever I've had a car serviced the garage has given me a list of all the things done - plugs, filters, brake fluid changed, A/C checked etc - plus they usually do little things like top up the screenwash and mention anything that might need attention soon. Have you checked over all those things to see if they look clean/full?
£600 is a serious bill for a service, my last one was a big one and was still less than half that!

Trading standards might be worth a call

Is this going to be another one of those threads (there seems to be a lot in the motoring section) where the OP disappears, so we dont get any response

Almost definately, it is an unfortunate scenario that happens all over the internet.

Not restricted to this board on MSE, it also regularly occurs on Vent board and others.
  • Maybe they have had their internet cut off because they couldn't afford to pay it after the £600 service bill...........
