    Shame on you Pete :D

Not a MSE way to see things IMHO

Even if you go via the USA discounters.

    Haha totally agree.
You'll never see the real world from a cruise

Believe me, I've seen plenty of the 'Real World'.

A cruise is merely an indulgence, and part of the one we're about to start off on a week on Saturday is across 'The Pond', with 6 consecutive days where there'll be no land in sight, just the Ship, the sea, the sun, the rain [maybe], the moon and the stars at night....I reckon that's all part of the Real World.

Japan is a great choice and if you do go then look at getting a JR pass for the trains. It has to be purchased before arrival in the country and is the only realistic way to make trains (particularly Shinkansen - bullet - trains affordable).

An alternative would be South Korea which is fabulous and small enough to see pretty much the whole country in 3 weeks. Coaches are affordable and very comfortable.

If it's going to be the last long haul(I don't believe a word of it), then definitely go as far as you can. New Zealand/Oz for instance.

I was lucky enough to get flights to NZ with Thai Airways for £400. Even Perth for £300. Did some whale watching and exploring.
If you aren't working, you can grab the deals when they come along. Also learn to pick the best seats for extra comfort. Walk around during the flight. Stopover somewhere to break up the journey, so that it's a pleasure and not a chore.

I would add a few cities to the bucket list. Stay in hostels to keep price down, they are not just for young people, we stayed in two aged late 60s.
Berlin, Prague, Barcelona for example do not involve long flights plus a day or two to get used to a new time zone.
