Claiming care costs back?

Took me about half an hour, literally, to find how to do this!!! I also don't think this is the best area for it, but we'll see.
So hello,
I wanted to ask a question on behalf of my husband.
He was a carer to his granndfather for close to ten years. He didn't claim any help in that time. However, his grandad was then moved into a carehome and when he passed, December 2015, they had to sell his flat to pay off his care costs. I always thought that he could have reclaimed on this but he never did.
Is there anything he could do now?
Thank you
