6 months winter/ 6 months summer

I was just musing that there may be some cost benefit in switching energy provider twice a year. Say you found a company that gives cheap gas, but expensive electricity, they might be cheapest for winter. Another company that gives cheap electricity but expensive gas might be cheapest for summer.

Similarly, if you didn't have gas, the prices for day/night rate electricity might be relevant.

Is there any merit in my musings?

I actually did the calculations once.......yes....spreadsheet and everything...

It all depends on what the prices might be 6 months down the line. So you have to factor in a variable, and you do not know what that variable will be. Furthermore you have to find a loophole of avoiding an early switch penalty (there are ways).

.....but based on tariffs that were available at the time, the savings were not worth the effort, in my case at least.

I often choose a new gas supplier in April/May to 'fix' the energy charge for the coming Winter. This decision is based on my pattern of usage and what I think will happen over the coming months re prices.

    Cheap gas yes
    Cheap electricity yes .
Two separate suppliers no need to swap at half time .

Like Hengus i tend to swap around this time of year .My views on prices for the following year meant i took out two year fixed price contracts .
