Verbal contract

I recently had a salesman attend my home to measure up a new set of patio doors.

The verbal quote was somewhere near what I expected and said he would probably go ahead. The salesman explained that he would email the written quote when he returned to the office to allow us to continue.

I haven't signed anything or paid any money.

I didn't hear anything so a week later phoned to chase it up. The salesman was on holiday and staff members couldn't find any paperwork but promised they would look into it and get back to me by the following day.

Again I didn't hear anything so went elsewhere and agreed and paid a deposit for another company to go the work.

I sent an email to the original company explaining that I no longer needed the quote and would not be authorising any work. This was sent within 14 days.

The company is now telling me they have ordered the patio doors and that I must pay or they will take legal action.

Where do I stand legally
