Not sure what made me look at this thread, but thank you all.

I'm going to print all of these out and store them away for future use. Not a nice thing to think about but there are some beautiful words there, very fitting.
Do not allow the risk of failure to stop you trying!

the following song was very apt at my dads funeral, as it was also in the charts at the time

'you are not alone' by michael jackson

    Another day has gone
    I'm still all alone
    How could this be
    You're not here with me
    You never said goodbye
    Someone tell me why
    Did you have to go
And leave my world so cold

Everyday I sit and ask myself
    How did love slip away
Something whispers in my ear and says
    That you are not alone
For I am here with you
    Though you're far away
    I am here to stay

    But you are not alone
For I am here with you
    Though we're far apart
    You're always in my heart
    But you are not alone

    'Lone, 'lone
    Why, 'lone

    Just the other night
I thought I heard you cry
    Asking me to come
And hold you in my arms
    I can hear your prayers
    Your burdens I will bear
But first I need your hand
    Then forever can begin

Everyday I sit and ask myself
    How did love slip away
Something whispers in my ear and says
    That you are not alone
For I am here with you
    Though you're far away
    I am here to stay

    For you are not alone
For I am here with you
    Though we're far apart
    You're always in my heart
    For you are not alone

Whisper three words and I'll come runnin'
And girl you know that I'll be there
    I'll be there

    You are not alone
For I am here with you
    Though you're far away
    I am here to stay
    For you are not alone
For I am here with you
    Though we're far apart
    You're always in my heart

    For you are not alone
For I am here with you
    Though you're far away
    I am here to stay

    For you are not alone
For I am here with you
    Though we're far apart
    You're always in my heart

    For you are not alone...

    or this one
'Angel' - sung by angelis - originally by sarah mclachan

    ;
    Spend all your time waiting
    For that second chance
For a break that would make it okay
    Theres always one reason
    To feel not good enough
And its hard at the end of the day
    I need some distraction
    Oh beautiful release
    Memory seeps from my veins
    Let me be empty
    And weightless and maybe
    Ill find some peace tonight

In the arms of an angel
    Fly away from here
From this dark cold hotel room
And the endlessness that you fear
You are pulled from the wreckage
    Of your silent reverie
Youre in the arms of the angel
May you find some comfort there

So tired of the straight line
    And everywhere you turn
Theres vultures and thieves at your back
And the storm keeps on twisting
You keep on building the lie
That you make up for all that you lack
    It dont make no difference
    Escaping one last time
Its easier to believe in this sweet madness oh
This glorious sadness that brings me to my knees

In the arms of an angel
    Fly away from here
From this dark cold hotel room
And the endlessness that you fear
You are pulled from the wreckage
    Of your silent reverie
Youre in the arms of the angel
May you find some comfort there
Youre in the arms of the angel
May you find some comfort here

heard on the radio one day whilst driving to work - and it brought a tear to my eye
smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;)

    All Is Well

    Death is nothing at all,
I have only slipped into the next room
I am I and you are you
Whatever we were to each other, that we are still.
Call me by my old familiar name,
Speak to me in the easy way which you always used
Put no difference in your tone,
Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow
Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together.
Play, smile, think of me, pray for me.
Let my name be ever the household word that it always was,
Let it be spoken without effect, without the trace of shadow on it.
Life means all that it ever meant.
It it the same as it ever was, there is unbroken continuity.
Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight?
I am waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near,
    Just around the corner.
    All is well.

    By Henry Scott Holland (1847-1918)
    Canon of St Paul's Cathedral

thank you!!! i have been looking for this poem for years
  • one of my favourite poems is this one.

    Remember
    By Christina Rossetti

REMEMBER me when I am gone away,
    Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go, yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you plann'd:
    Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.
Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad
  • what a load of !!!!
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, champagne in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming ~ WOO HOO what a ride!

I did this reading at my dear aunt's funeral. The vicar asked me if I would be OK and very confidently I said yes of course. Half way through the reading my voice didn't appear to want to say anything, my knees went to jelly and I started shaking like a leaf. I did manage to finish but it was such an ordeal. Just a bit of advice to the OP no matter how you think you may behave, believe me it is totally different when you are in that scenario.

is there another poem that is sort of a cross between 'all is well' and 'do not stand'?

I vaguely(sp) remember one about slipping into the next room but by the time you come and have a look they have moved to somewhere else?!?

Miss Me But Let Me Go

When I come to the end of the road

And the sun has set for me

I want no rites in a gloom filled room

Why cry for a soul set free?

Miss me a little, but not for long

And not with your head bowed low

Remember the love that once we shared

Miss me, but let me go.

For this is a journey we all must take

    And each must go alone.

It's all part of the master plan

A step on the road to home.

When you are lonely and sick at heart

    Go the friends we know.

Laugh at all the things we used to do

Miss me, but let me go.

Grumpy, this is beautiful, nearly had me in tears, and that's not easy!
