IT departments can only work with the resources (and idiots) that surround them so please leave us alone
That's a fair point - though I would never dream of calling IT outside normal working hours. That's plain rude
I've worked in many companies that have the security policy I suggested and not noticed a problem, but never enquired if this kind of thing happened regularly. How on earth do people forget a password they use every day
Some people, huhWarning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -
you want to work at our place. People change their password, log in, work for the day, log out, go home, go to bed, get up, go to work and forget what password they chose 24 hours ago and hit the 'IT' autodial thinking somebody is going to be there at 7am, phone diverts to me if i'm on call and then complain when i shout at them and tell them to sling it.
We'd have proper policies n'all to be honest if we had 2000 / XP clients but it's not possible in all places.0 -
Kingston Communications (Hull's telephone provider) sell Voice Mail systems to Police Forces. They even got an award for their product because of its 'security'! In fact the security was so bad, you could bypass the password on the master voice mail box by pressing the '*' key twice!
Once into the master voice mail box you had access to a list of all voice mail boxes on the system and their corresponding passwords!
You can imagine what a furore that produced when I told the Chief Constable's Office for each of the forces involved! That included Devon & Cornwall, West Mercia and South Yorkshire.
And do you know why you can no longer leave tape-recorded messages on Crimestoppers? Well, it's because I told a well known Sunday newspaper of a similar problem!0
