Hi Wonderful OSers,
My MIL generously gave DH a jar of hm picalilli, which I've never pretended to like and he's recently admitted he isn't too keen on. It's quite chunky, so there's a possibility we could put some through the food processor and make it better for his sandwiches, but does anyone have any other ideas for using it up? Could it go in a curry in small quantities?
Have tried googling but just came up with recipes to make more of the stuff! :rotfl:
TIA

I remember years ago you could buy bottles of piccalilli sauce (without the chunks of veggies) and I'm guessing you could maybe make something similar by whizzing it all up in your food processor/liquidiser or with a hand blender until smooth. You'd then have a sauce for cold meats (eg ham), sandwiches, snacks (eg pork pie, sausage roll) or even on chips.
Other suggestions: Mixed with mayo for a kind of mustard-mayo. Or added to a white sauce for fish. It probably could go in curry too.
If you don't like it at all and DH isn't too keen, you've nothing to lose by giving it a try.Be kind to others and to yourself too.0 -

Thanks YorksLass. Will have a go at whizzing it up and mixing with mayo. I'm veggie, so it'll take a while for DH to get through it with the cold meats, but hopefully it being smoother will help.
Tried some (rinsed) in curry last night - was okay until one bit, which had definitely retained the mustardy flavour - yuck!
Slinky - as a last resort I will compost it, but I really don't like wasting food!Mortgage free 16/06/2023! £132,500 cleared in 11 years, 3 months and 7 days

Mmm, if that mustard taste has permeated the veggies then they might be beyond rescue. The sauce, however, could be calmed down by adding a little bit of cream, creme fraiche, plain yogurt - take your pick.
Another use might be to mix the sauce with some honey to use as a glaze for roasted gammon.

There has to be a balance between wasting food you don't like, and wasting more food you do like trying to get something edible out of the combination.Make £2025 in 2025

Could you spread a bit in a veggie burger (i.e. pickle+mustard) with a bit of ketchup?
I also read online that someone used it in a sweet and sour dish...worth a punt. Otherwise, send it my way! I eat neither cheese nor ham but could eat piccalilli with a spoon!0 -
Just give it to someone who likes piccalilli!0

Thanks all for your comments.
Slinky - yes, I agree, but the suggestions from YorksLass don't need to involve wasting anything as long as some judicious tasting happens before chucking lots of it in a dish.
M&M90 - I like the idea of having it as relish in a burger (once I've pureed it). That might work
Marmaduke... not sure I know anyone apart from the FIL (and that might raise some awkward questions!). Pretty sure it's not even MIL's thing, I think it's even possible that a 'well-meaning' neighbour gave her the ingredients to make it as 'she has a big family who would like it'.
I've got loads of ideas now... will have to investigate!Mortgage free 16/06/2023! £132,500 cleared in 11 years, 3 months and 7 days

Oh dear, I would bin it along with any jars of marmite! Cannot bear either. Im not sure the worms in the compost bin would want it either lol :-)0
