How soon can this be answered ?

I'd every intention of buying a 20" flat screen TV today with freeview built in. But overnight I remembered that we've never been able to record anything from set-top freeview box. So where would we stand with an inbuilt freeview?.

We can record channel 1/2/3/4 on the conventional tv, but once we swith over to freeview on AV1, that's it, we can't record. I often wondered if we have all the cables connected correctly, but I suppose if we hadn't, nothing would work.

After AV1, we have AV2 which is where we go to watch DVD's.

Whilst I appreciate someone might direct me to a technical site where instuctions could be found, with a narrow window of opportunity to get out and make the purchase, I'd really appreciate an a/b/c guide thrown at me asap please.

  • Why couldn't you record freeview? As long as there is a scart out on the back of the TV you should be ok. Check what outputs are on the back of the television (typically you would only have inputs but i've not got a TV with freeview built in)

I suspect you've not got your cables set up properly if you can't record freeview.. does your box have a pass-through scart port?

Unless there is an output on your tv that would let you feed a DVD recorder/VCR then the answer is no.

How do you currently record the analogue channels - with a VCR?

EDIT - As ringo says you should be able to record from a freeview box without any great difficulty

We bought a nice new TV with freeview receiver built in.

Fantastic, thought I and up-scarted it all.

We went to record our first prog late one night and ...
... oh dear. We needed to leave the TV ON to record!!!!

I went out next day and bought a freeview box and now we can record things without the TV on.

We can also view one thing whilst watching another.

You may well be able to record from the TV if its on.
  • You should be able to record, but not watch another program at the same time, if you use ringo's method, unless of course the TV has a dual tuner (unlikely!)

You maybe better off splitting your aerial and putting your old freeview box in between your incoming aerial and the VCR, and the incoming signal goes to both the TV and the video recorder, then as ringo says, use a scart from the VCR to the TV.

Makes sense I guess, when the TV is in standby the tuner is off.

Wonder if the OP has bought the tele or not?

Is the TV the only option to you? Otherwise, you should purchase one of these: http://www.soundandvisiononline.co.uk/listview/index.asp?strSearch=dmrez27

Why? Because it is much easier to program it to record in advance and you'll have no problem recording from Freeview.

we just brought a sony bravia 32" lcd, we have not tried it yet, but it says in instruction booklet, that if u want to record a digital(freeview) channel, then leave the tv on until programme starts, then you can turn it onto standby, and it will still record, hopefully the one you are looking to purchase does the same, hope this helps, thanks Dave.

Amazon also have the Panasonic for £150 with free delivery, but they claim a delivery time of 4 to 6 weeks!

Alternatives here, some are cheaper: http://shopping.kelkoo.co.uk/ss-freeview-dvd-recorders.html
