    You could buy, for example, an iphone 4 on ebay for £40 - get a 3 SIM as suggested. Then when you return to Europe, if you have no further need for it, sell it back on ebay, give or take, for what you paid for it.

    3 Roaming in USA can be VERY SLOW - good enough to check emails, facebook, etc.., but for other stuff can be hopeless.

    Buying a USA SIM (for example T-Mobile or AT+T) can be dear - it's not like in UK where you can get them for free online, or in most shops for 99p. And pay as you go Data rates are MUCH DEARER than in EU.
