Ok, just in case anyone!!!8217;s interested, another thing I!!!8217;ve realised - having absorbed the information above and other material - is that the thermostat on the tank I can see and have changed is the tank!!!8217;s and not the immersion heater!!!8217;s.
I!!!8217;ve not checked yet (I!!!8217;m in bed) but presumably there is a 2nd thermostat under the immersion heater cap and it!!!8217;s probably this one that!!!8217;s set to something high, like 80. At least I hope- better than it being broken!0 -
Best to work with one control at a time, the boiler temp is more about the amount of energy you want in the system to heat the house or water, in less efficient places you tend to need it high when it gets cold and lower in the summer when you are only heating water, higher should mean the water heats up quicker handy if you use a lot and need it back up to temp quicker.
The tank thermostat decides how hot the water in the tank is and should control the boiler/valve that heats the water turning it off once hot enough.
We tend to have it hotter(can control ours via the web) when we are using more hot water eg, baths or visitors.
An immersion thermostat under the cap may look like this.

(Remember under the cap are the wires to the heating element and thermostat)0
