Online training unfair cancellation fee

Hello all,
I bought an online training course from Origym, they offer training courses for personal trainers.
I paid a £150 deposit using my debit card on January 19th 2018.
I was due to pay £117 a month for 7 months.
I cancelled the Direct Debit on February 12th 2018.
The important bit - I did not log in to the training content in anyway, so therefore did not receive anything of value from them. They have agreed I did not access my account.
I emailed them to explain a massive change in circumstances meaning I could not afford to carry on, they wanted a £250 cancellation fee! Even though I essentially paid them a £150 deposit for nothing.
This cancellation fee is in the contract along with a 30 day cooling off period which I missed.
They have already sent a 'solicitors' letter stating payment of the £250 must be made or court action will be taken.
I am inclined to stand my ground as they surely would not pursue me in court for this, or they could even chase me for the full amount £819 I guess, but my point is I did not gain anything from this, I can understand if I downloaded all the training material.
Any help on this is greatly appreciated as it is stressing the hell out of me!
Thanks.

You don't need to gain anything from them to be owe them money.
You agreed a contract, that contract is binding and the service is there to use whether you do so or not.
You are owe the money, you could hold off and see where it goes but they have a case.0 -

The T&Cs are quite clear on what happens if you cancel
If you cancel within the first 7 days you would receive a full refund within 30 days
If you cancel within the first 6 weeks you lose what you have paid to date plus the £250 cancellation fee.
When did you notify them in writing of the cancellation? (cancelling the direct debit is not cancelling the contract and they state cancellations must be in writing)
I would certainly not assume they will not take it any further.0 -

Feb 21st I requested the cancellation in writing, do you not think I could pursue them on unfair terms?0 -
You cancelled the direct debit without agreement from them or acknowledgement of the cancellationEx forum ambassador
