Grade 2 Heart Murmur - Insurance?

Hi there,

I'm currently looking to adopt a 2 year old crossbreed from a rescue centre and they've informed me that he has a Grade 2 heart murmur. They said this shouldn't be anything to worry about as Grade 2 is considered an 'innocent' murmur and doesn't require medication. However I don't know any pet insurers that will cover pre-existing conditions such as a heart murmur and I'm worried that if I take Milo home that a few years down the line his condition may get worse and I won't be able to pay thousands for treatment.

Does anyone know of a pet insurance company that will take a pre-existing heart murmur condition? Also if anyone knows roughly how much the treatments could cost so I can factor in a savings pot in case the worst happens?

Thank you in advance.

Have you talked to the rescue? They may have recommendations, or I believe some will help with later vet costs if necessary.

    NOT a recommendation but

Bought By Many have a policy that covers pre existing conditions diagnosed or treated more than 3 months before taking out the policy

Vetsmedicover also cover some pre existing conditions

You could contact these companies and see what they say.

I have no experience of either company.

There is so much variation in heart murmurs. Some dogs like our Monty (Cavalier) had 2/3 at age 7 but only needed heart meds at 12. Izzy, another cavalier had a sudden onset one at 5 needed meds at 7 and was dead before he was 9. Joly had a 1/2 at about 4 ,but only showed any heart problem (audible beat) a few weeks before he died a few weeks ago,one month short of 15.

A friend had a female (again cavalier) with a 6 for a number of years , needing no meds just before she died.

In case anyone thinks all cavaliers get serious heart problems, Teddy is 14 and a half and has just been noticed to have a very slight murmur, which the vet suspects is just an age thing and not the usual MVD.

The cost of heart drugs varies according to the dog's size, but Monty was springer size, yet only cost about £20/month, for two years, until his last few months, because I bought the drugs online (A friend actually cut her bill by 50% after previously buying from her vet.)
