I've had a friend on the phone this evening in dispair and distress!
Basics, applied for a loan, never ever had credit previously, was declined.
Applied elsewhere, declined instantly.
Tried with their bank, declined (26 years same bank!)
Checked their credit file, all good besides one warning, CCJ for £242,000 issued in 2016??!!!
They know nothing about this, never received any documents and also this was issued to an old address but CCJ date is only 9 weeks after they moved, and didn't receive any paperwork prior to then?!
I've told them it could be a mistake (unlikely I know) but they've checked another CRA report and same is reported.
Obviously advised them to call courts and chase, for details.
My question is, what can that sum be for?
They've never had a mortgage, no loans, nothing.
I'm as curious as they are!

Who was the credit file with?
You need to check all of them to find out who the debt is with.
If that fails, try https://www.trustonline.org.uk/index.php/search-yourself0 -
There are a couple of reports on here of formatting errors adding a couple of zeros to credit reports.

Have they just checked one or all three CRA...my ccj"s are correct on 2 out of the three and incorrect on Cap1 CRA.
If all three reports the same then certainly get onto court to find out whats going on...maybe simple as added to the wrong report or as serious as ID theft.0 -

The good news is that now your friend has given his address history to the CRAs, anyone looking for him will be able to write to, or send bailiffs to, his present address!
Ask the court to send the particulars of claim and details of any enforcement. If this is Northampton you will struggle to get through on the phone but they do respond by email in 2-3 weeks.0 -
Hi Wizardy18
It's easy to understand why your friend was so shocked to find about this, but before they panic they need to know more about the situation. As fatbelly says, the first thing to do is get more information from the court that made the CCJ.
Your friend can find out which court issued the CCJ from their credit file (there are 3 websites where they can check it for free) or at www.trustonline.org.uk (for a small fee). They then need to contact the court for more information, including who made the claim.
Once they know this they can decide on their next steps, whether that's challenging the CCJ, setting up a payment plan or looking at other debt options. You can post back on the forum for more advice or contact one of the free debt advice agencies. I hope it all goes well.
