Hassle free encryption on Windows 8/10 or Linux

On the look for a laptop for the commute, I'll be doing some important work stuff on there, so looking at encrypting the disk.

What options do I have for Windows 8 or 10, or if it is better locked down Linux. Software program suggestions please. Thanks in advance

For really simple use, encrypted USB keys. They are cheap and work well for docs. You have to think about what you are securing though. If you are locking your email as well you will likely need to encrypt the whole drive to get the local email cache, also if you have VPN or other remote connections with passwords saved they can even more critical than the local data.

^^ Veracrypt is great -- very secure, easy to use, and compatible with both Linux and Windows XP or later.

You can encrypt a whole drive (block device), partition or create a file. Verycrypt can then be used to mount the drive, partition or file, which appears as an additional drive in Explorer.

Get a machine with Windows 10 Pro and use the built in Bitlocker.

Another +1 for Veracrypt.

Do encrypt the whole drive for that extra security, rather than just some directories. I've done it with my laptops for several years now no problems.

You end up more or less straight away with an "enter password" prompt on top left of black screen prior to initial boot.

Works a treat (though takes minutes to decode the password on older machines - was no good on my 2010 Samsung for instance)

On linux, I use an encrypted partition, which I mount as /work. So I just keep all my work stuff on there, and unmount it whenever it's not in active use. Browser and email profiles are all stored on there. All the required software is available as standard.

You'll also need a backup scheme which doesn't leave it exposed. (ETA: Though if backup media is kept at home, maybe that's not such an issue for you.)

In principle, swap file could leak information. You can encrypt that too, but I don't bother.

Another vote for Bitlocker on Win 10 Pro. It is used for material up to RESTRICTED by government departments.
