It's unclear what these options will be - we've asked the RAC if customers will be allowed to leave early or if they'll get money back - but if you feel you've lost out, you could ask to be compensated, or to be allowed to leave early and move to another insurer penalty-free.

Why does MSE seem to be obsessed with compensation every time a company makes a mistake regardless of any actual loss to consumers. Yes they should be following the rules but why would anyone deserve compensation in this case?

The fact that you need to shop around to get the best price is extremely well known and well advertised. If people are still not shopping around then a message on their renewal letter isn't going to make much difference.
Firms failing to get this right may have led to consumers losing out as they do not have the right information to decide whether or not to shop around.

Shopping around or not shouldn't be a decision you need to make; it should be something that everyone does every time they are looking to renew an insurance policy.
