Secure Website

Options
Hi all

Looks like I'm going to need an SSL certificate for my website so it shows as secure. I have a contact form which only gathers the briefest of information - I do my real information gathering via a secure website.

My webmaster has quoted me £50 a month which is 10x more than I expected to pay. Can someone point me in the right direction for a reputable company which gives the low level of security I require? I have even thought about removed the contact me form but I think it will be offputting to see "insecure" when accessing my website.

Thanks

If it's only a name and email address or telephone number I would just put a note underneath saying it's not sent securely because no personal identifying data is collected

I've got no issues supplying that level of information over an insecure link

Or use a 3rd party secured form like

  • go to cloudflare.com and sign up for their service. There is an option for free SSL, 5 USD and 10USD. You can probably do with the free one ;)

Thanks all for taking the time to reply. My webmaster has emailed to say its £50 a year and he mistyped. I'm about to look up Jensmail (change from Jotform?) and have watched the great video on Cloudflare. It looks really interesting but also beyond my competence level to understand.

    Thank again all.

£50 a month is shocking. That is clearly a rip-off. You can get a free SSL certificate with a service called Lets Encrypt.

Really it depends on your hosting provider. SSL works by installing the certificate on your server, so even if you use a script like Jems Form, you will still need to secure your server. Also in the very near future, Google will require your website to have an SSL otherwise you are docked a small amount in your listings and will soon have a little notice next to your search entry saying that the site is unsecured.

Who currently hosts your website, lots of hosting providers will provide an SSL service at a lot less than £50 a month. Maybe skip the webmaster and go straight to the hosting company.
