Car hire insurance abroad

Does anyone know if there is an insurance policy that you can take out in the UK that will cover you for all eventualities when hiring a car abroad rather than get ripped off once you arrive?
I always end up paying out for expensive cover to the car hire company at the airport because they scare you about not having it.
It would be great if there was a 'Euro policy' that you could pay in the UK that the rest of Europe recognised and provided good cover rather than these expensive policies.
Thanks

If you take separate insurance you usually need to leave a big credit card deposit (maybe as much as £1200) with the hire company which may cause issues if you need that balance available on your credit card0 -
There are several companies that provide this service. Some trustworthy companies can be found here: compareexcess.com0

I use direct-carexcess.co.uk. They are part of AIG. I have claimed for the excess on a damaged alloy wheel and I was happy with the claims process.0
