If a car with power steering was to have it fail whilst the driver was in the middle of a manoeuvre such as overtaking or starting to turn a fairly sharp corner, not only would the failure make that car unroadworthy, it could also make it a potential death trap.

Incorrect and just because i didn't say (which i suppose i should've) doesn't mean it didn't happen. You could ask if it was present or not & we can go from there but anyway...

It actually came on on the test drive. I had my laptop & VCDS with me and read the codes and cleared them.

I told the garage all about this when i went in with her to discuss the possibility of buying.
They said it's likely due to being stood for a while (related to the battery as someone else mentioned here). They said they'd get it fixed.

Now i know i know, at this point the option was there to walk away but that isn't what happened so no point in dwelling on it. We may as well deal with what has happened and not what could've happened but didn't.

I told them i cleared all codes to see what would return & for the rest of the test drive it didn't return. When they had it in they said the battery caused it (obviously didn't), then they said later on they'd sorted it (obviously haven't).
  • I should stress here that nobody is looking to cause maximum trouble. Nobody is wanting legal action, nobody is wanting arguments & confrontation. At the end of the day all she wants is this issue to be sorted. Preferably the pleasant way.

    Why did you do that?

I'll let you know once you tell me how it helps where we go from here regards getting this situation sorted.

I can possibly understand you reading the codes, but why would you clear them? That makes no sense.

So you knew before purchase that this fault was there...?

This really doesn't help as it suggests you were aware of the issue and purchased the car knowing about it. Also from a legal perspective the fact that you had the equipment and knowledge to not only read but also clear the codes is not going to help your argument as I'd also be arguing that you purchased the car having taken account of the fault that you admit to clearing.

OP was it written into the order form that the fault would be investigated and rectified as a condition of purchase?

Again I ask what business it is of yours to clear the fault. If it was to make it look like there was no fault rather than to raise the fault with the dealer, then it is misrepresentation. Bizarre reasoning behind it.

Try a new battery, or at least test the one you have.
