What’s Edgeley/Stockport like?

Hi everyone,
I posted a while ago on here looking for advice on where we should buy our first home in Manchester. After a couple of months, we’ve viewed over twenty properties and lost out on two houses (in Cheadle Hulme and Prestwich - this house went over £30K higher than the offers over!).
There’s not been many houses that have caught our attention and fulfill at least some of our requirements, but we recently discovered a lovely house in Edgeley which is of a good size and has potential. We fell in love with Cheadle Village and loved how we had shops and cafes on our doorstep, but the houses seem to be going well above our budget unfortunately. With this in mind, we decided to cast our net a bit wider and discovered Edgeley. We did look in Cheadle Heath but it felt a bit on the outskirts and we didn’t really get a great vibe from there.
While we’ve visited Edgeley on a few occasions, I wondered if anyone who currently lives there could share their experience? I’ve noticed on Instagram a few FTBers are moving into the area which I take as a good sign as they seem to be renovating their houses. Driving through the roads, we’ve noticed there’s building work and some really pretty houses.
Ideally we want to move somewhere with amenities and things to do on our doorstep and I know Castle Street isn’t exactly Cheadle Village, but does anyone think there’s any sign of it improving? I know a vegan beauty salon has opened which I think is a good sign and if there’s an influx of FTBers, maybe cafes and independent shops will follow suit? I think Stockport town centre isn’t too far of a walk from Edgeley and it seems to have good transport links into Manchester which is vital for us and our jobs. I think we would also walk into Cheadle or drive over for when we fancy going for dinner and drinks.
We have mainly been looking south of Alexandra Park and the reservoir as I’ve heard this is the nicer part of Edgeley. We are aware of the flight path but it doesn’t bother us too much from what we can see (as long as it isn’t too loud at night!). I have been tracking the flights on the flight radar app and can’t see too much activity throughout the night. In the house we found, we can’t really hear it thanks to the double glazing.
Coming from a less desirable area of Manchester where we have been renting for several years, we are looking to move to a safe area, that’s on the up and will be a good investment with a real community feel.
We did look in Urmston, Prestwich and Heaton Chapel but the prices have increased dramatically over the past few months and we just can’t seem to get our foot in the door without it costing us way over what we could realistically afford!
The house we found does need quite a bit of work doing to it from what we can see, so we may be in a better position to do so with an area like this compared to somewhere which will cost us a lot to begin with before we even attempt to carry out some work. And as we are first time buyers, we want it to be a good investment where we can add value to our home in the next few years.
So for anyone living in Edgeley or knows of it, please share your experience with me! Thank you

I lived in Stockport for 10 years and go back frequently. Edgeley l would describe as borderline seedy. Have you tried Woodley or Romiley? Maybe even Great Moor or Davenport."There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". Don't take any notice of the flightpath. I lived under it for 10 years and my
Mum for 28 without a problem. There is no problem."There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0 -
There is a lot of money being spent in Stockport at the minute and over the next 5-10 years, I think Edgeley will be quite an expensive place to buy in compared to where it is now.
In terms of the flight path, I think you need to go and sit in a beer garden for a few hours and see what you think. Where I live is not under the flight path however a few days a year it feels like they have moved the flight path (something to do with the way the wind blows...that isnt a joke) we do notice it. Today is actually one of those days and I can hear a plane flying over as I type - that is about the 6th today, normally we get maybe 2-3 max.
But we may notice it more because it does not usually happen. If you are getting them all day every day then it may just fade to background noise.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a mortgage adviser, so you need to take my word for it. Edgeley is no better or worse than many parts of Greater Manchester. Crime and morons are everywhere believe me. I work day in day out all over Manchester, Cheshire, high peak etc. There are no gateways for criminals and morons. They can go where they like. Dont be fooled by so called "nice areas". These are often estate agent constructs. Just go for the house that fits you and presents the best value. Paying for "potential" is EA bullsh£t . You pay for whats in front of you.
PS i wouldnt discount cheadle heath either..! Its a pleasant enough area..Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0 -
Have you considered somewhere like Greenfield in Saddeworth outside of Oldham? There is a station.
Also there is somewhere like this http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-64409386.html The local station is used by people to commute to Manchester. No vegan anythings though as far as I know.0 -

Thanks for this AGC! When we've been looking at houses near to the village (Bulkeley Road) we noticed the planes flew over that direction and were quite low. It's only when we've been looking at houses near to the reservoir (Cheadle Old Road/Edgeley Road) we've seen they are even lower - but I'm not sure if they are the same flights heading towards the village (Bulkely Road) or if they are along a different path. Do you have any insight into this? I've been looking on the flight radar apps and can see the altitude/quantity of planes flying over the area.
In the houses we didn't really notice them but I just want to be comfortable with what we can expect even though I know it's a tough one as it could change!0 -
I imagine they will be the same flights otherwise they would probably be too close together - but I have no idea, I could be wrong.
We have gone back to no flights going over today and I do notice a difference. When you are in the back garden during summer maybe? But I remember living on a main road and after a few weeks I stopped being woken up by the traffic.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a mortgage adviser, so you need to take my word for it. I expect you could get used to it. I know someone who lives in Edgeley on the flight path and i would find the flights intolerable but having said that, i am an infrequent visitor. When you live there i guess you get used to it.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry).
