Received PCN - Blue Badge Parking Space Issue

OK, so the other day the driver and myself travelled back from Devon to Manchester, after 4 hours 30 minutes of driving and having arrived at just gone midnight in the lovely British rain (insert sarcasm) the driver parked on a pay and display car park that is not pay and display when the shop opposite is closed.
The driver went down to the car in the morning to notice a PCN. However, the driver later realised that they had parked in a blue badge holder space (the entire car park was empty, it was throughout the night). The driver didn't realise this when they parked there because there is no disabled sign on the ground, but there is a small blue sign in front of the parking space next to the one the driver parked in.
The driver would not have parked there had they known it was a blue badge holder space, my mum's husband is disabled and even though the car park was empty I and the driver both understand and appreciate the importance of these parking spaces.
As this is a PCN the driver and I is not sure whether to ignore it, the driver wants to express and communicate to the parking operator that they should make it clearer, because when its night time its difficult to know that it is a blue badge holder space.
What should the driver do in this situation?
The parking company is: Excel Parking Services
Thank you.

firstly you should edit the above and only mention the words DRIVER or KEEPER - no admissions as to actually WHO did WHAT
as this is a private parking pcn you should forget "what happened" and follow the advice in the NEWBIES FAQ sticky thread near the top of this forum, using the template appeal to appeal it as keeper , waiting until day 26 if the PPC is a BPA member , or day 19 for an IPC member
DO NOT appeal it yet , learn this topic by doing more research
I suggest you name the PPC involved if you want bespoke help too
ignoring it could lead to a CCJ and a trashed credit rating, so be aware that this could be the consequence of ignoring it
signage and markings play a crucial role , so clearly they were inadequate in conveying the information about it being a BB bay0 -
Thanks RedX, I've read the newbies FAQ and several other threads.
Also, wanted to add that this is what I received, interestingly they forgot to provide any sort of serial number so I couldn't even view any details if I wanted, also the company behind this are Excel.
I've added photos below, not sure if you can see these:

I will wait for them to send a letter before any action is taken.0 -
Update:
I've read a few threads whereby people contacted the parking property owners, in this case, it will either be Booths Media City or Peel Holdings. A thread I read, a lady had complained to Booths and they had the PCN cancelled.
Would anyone recommend this?0 -
This is an entirely unregulated industry which is scamming the public with inflated claims for minor breaches of contracts for alleged parking offences, aided and abetted by a handful of low-rent solicitors.
Parking Eye, CPM, Smart, and another company have already been named and shamed, as has Gladstones Solicitors, and BW Legal, (these two law firms take hundreds of these cases to court each year). They lose most of them, and have been reported to the regulatory authority by an M.P. for unprofessional conduct
Hospital car parks and residential complex tickets have been especially mentioned.
The problem has become so rampant that MPs have agreed to enact a Bill to regulate these scammers. Watch the video of the Second Reading in the HofC recently.

and complain in the most robust terms to your MP. With a fair wind they will be out of business by Christmas. You never know how far you can go until you go too far.0 -

we always recommend complaining to the landowner, it goes without saying
the trick is not to mention who was driving when complaining, so follow the same advice I gace you earlier, the royal "we" will suffice
the words "ME , MYSELF & I" are "banned"0 -
As above, always complain to the landowner as keeper.
Other than that, wait for the NTK then appeal using the template from the NEWBIES, then follow the advice for IPC scammers.I married my cousin. I had to...I don't have a sister.
All my screwdrivers are cordless."You're Safety Is My Primary Concern Dear" - Laks0 -
The NEWBIES thread tells everyone to complain first, that's why there is a link in that sticky, to 'SUCCESSFUL COMPLAINTS ABOUT PPCS' a thread that's been going for many years.PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).
