Hi All
Our washing machine leaked tonight and flooded our kitchen.
Water has got under the tiles in the kitchen and gone under the carpet in the lounge.
We are going to make a claim on our contents insurance with northern rock (hope they have some money!) tomorrow. Before we do that I wanted to check if there is any advice anyone can give to make sure our claim isnt refused.
I have checked that our supercoice policy covers such things but I get the feeling they will try and get out of it if they can!
Any help would be really appreciated
Kind Regards

Hi there.
Firstly, Northern Rock are NOT the insurers; If you insure your home through your bank or building socitely, they are just the "agent" and there will be someone in the background that is the insurer. According to their website, the insurer is Axa. Axa is a french company that in the 1990's bought the UK insurers PPP (health insurance), Guardian Royal Exchange (had a BIG office in Ipswich that is now the home of Axa Direct) and UAP (Ok, this one is a French company, but they bought Provincial Insurance so it counts).
As for the claim, be honest. If you lie and your insurers catch you, this is called "fraud". If you tell them your toaster was damaged when it wasn't, even if it only cost £10, your insurers could turn down your whole claim.
Having said that, you should be insured for what used to be called (in the days of Commercial Union, Royal Insurance and even General Accident - I am so old) "burst pipe" and this will include water leaking from a washing machine even if it didn't burst.
I'll get off my soap box now....In the beginning, the universe was created. This made a lot of people very angry and was widely regarded as a bad move. The late, great, Douglas Adams.0
