Need to reduce circumference of tree stake for metapost

I have some tree stakes that are slightly too wide for the round metaposts they are to be used for. Would anyone have any idea which method would be best to reduce them in circumference please. The well of the metapost is about five inches. I tried using sand-paper disc but is not effective enough.

They are to be used up garden path with ropes, to provide a measure of support for slightly disabled person to use .

Do you have a plane? You could plane the excess diameter off. You'll end up with a slightly polygon cross section but assuming the met post has blades inside it to cut into the wood it will be fine.

Failing that, a chisel and mallet working around the circumference will do the job.

I had to do something similar to a square fence post a few months ago and used a chisel and mallet. Several mm needed taking off. A sander won't do the job, but it will make it beautifully smooth where it doesn't need to be! At least you have the tool to make sure the tops of the post are smooth!

Slightly sharpen the metpost, and use a very large sledge. They will fit very tightly.
