Downloaded speed camera data for display on satnavs
Does anyone have any experience of using downloaded speed camera data for display on satnav maps?
I have an embedded satnav system in my VW Golf and, so far, I’ve found three possible sources of speed camera data:
I think the third source in the list is really a non-starter though. They claim that their files are updated on a monthly basis but the latest date of any of their files is 27/12/2016, well over a year old. And, when I checked the information about the two speed cameras near where I live, they show a 40mph speed limit. But those cameras have actually been in a 30mph limit for about two years now! Still, the downloads are free and so, as a temporary measure, I have used them in order to learn how to incorporate them into my satnav system.

- GPS Data Team (www.gps-data-team.com), with a one-off subscription charge of £4.
- PocketGPSWorld (www.pocketgpsworld.com), with an annual subscription charge of £19.99.
- https://free-speed-cam-updates.web2diz.net/volkswagen-speed-camera-download/, with no subscription charge and free downloads.

Just look out for the signs, it costs nothing.0

I downloaded the PocketGPSWorld (I have a lifetime subscription, from the days when you were awarded one if you reported a new camera) database to my Qashqai. It worked fine but it got wiped at some point, possibly after a service, but I've not bothered to do it again.0

My Mazda navigation system (I think it's Tom Tom underneath) does yearly map updates which include speed cameras. Not sure why this data is needed though, just be aware of the speed limit and don't exceed it and you don't get tickets
Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

In my VW Golf, I even have a speed limiter, which I do use on ordinary roads, and adaptive cruise control, which I do use on motorways, but each of these still relies on me noticing speed limit signs and adjusting the maximum speed that my car can travel at.
When the Mk3 Jazz became available in the UK in September 2015, I test drove one for about an hour. The Mk3 Jazz has a camera that can read road signs but, in that hour, it missed two speed limit signs! At one point, I was in a 30mph limit but the screen was telling me that I was in a 50mph limit! I came to the conclusion that the technology is not perfect and is really no better than the map data in my embedded satnav, which does show the speed limit at my car’s current location. But map data gets out of date over time, so you can’t rely 100% on that either.0 -

IMO, easier said than done. I think it is iniquitous that a momentary lapse of concentration, or a momentary distraction on the road, can cause you to miss a speed limit sign and you end up with a fine and penalty points. We are all human. I prefer to be as well “armed” as possible.

I don't understand. What use would be knowing the location of speed cameras be if you don't trust yourself or the sat nav to know the speed limit? Or would you always slow down to 20 at any speed camera?
You would've surprised at the number of people who brake to under 60 on my route to work.
It is actually a dual carriageway clearly signposted with NSL signs. There is even one about 100 yards past the speed camera.
Before it gets mentioned that NSL has different speeds for different vehicle types, I am only talking about car drivers here where the limit is 70 on a DC.
People need refresher training on the meaning of various road markings0 -
Yes, thank you. But it would be nice to hear from someone who has actually parted with money!
The data is the same either way. And if you add camera locations and they are verified you now get 12 months free, so not as good as it was but could still worthwhile. And the lifetime sub had to to be earned was not given for free, even if money did not change hands.
Even the AA use it on their paper atlas's which you can buy from £1.99 but only get updated once per year.0 -
PGPSW database is probably the most accurate and gives likely locations of mobile cameras. The TT one is so way out of date. The PGPSW forums give details of how to install into various devices.0
