Being burnt during combustion. Normal for combustion engines but excessive consumption suggests a fault.

Thanks for the reply, I guess this is a massively vague question but is there any examples of the types of faults that could cause this? I'm trying to gauge how likely this is anything serious

Possibly an urban myth, but I've heard tales about people holing plastic tanks and draining a few litres off, then using a plug to re-seal. Then returning every now and then to repeat.

I didn't know that they pugged the hole, I thought they just let it all run out. How responsible of them. :D

There was a lot of suggestive publicity a while back on this, something that you bought (I can't remember what) came with a drill mounted in like a toothpaste tube cap, that would be perfect to twizzle into these plastic tanks.

The car will use more diesel if is trying to clean the DPF.

Also, injectors could be worn or EGR valve clogged.

Then they can return and easily unplug it to get a few more litres. Theory being that by only taking a bit at a time, owner wouldn't notice, or wonder why it's getting worse on fuel.

If your fuel isn't being stolen it could be the oxygen sensor. Yes the dpf do use more fuel when regeneration occurs and the egr does to at points but very little when sooted up, but not to the extent you seem to be loosing fuel.

    Ducks and covers.

About 13 or so years ago, I noticed that my old Ford Sierra was consuming an unusual amount lot of petrol over the course of a couple of weeks. I didn't think too much about it and kept topping it up.

Then one night I happened to look out of the stair window to see some youths on my driveway, syphoning petrol out of the fuel tank.

They legged it leaving everything behind when I went out to confront them, but I'm pretty sure that wasn't their first visit. Nor was it their last.
  • Have you checked the consumption full tank to full tank, what is the mpg then you could check against others and how poor it is.
Remember diesel consumption is worse in cold weather more so on short runs, is the thermostat ok, is the engine showing normal temperature.

this would be my first guess, the recent cold couple of months will really hammer down mpg figures, even when driving the same route... for example, my 1.4 diesel ford fusion averaged 64 mpg before the darkest, coldest months, dropping to 54mpg - same commute etc., and now it's getting lighter and warmer it's starting to rise again, back up to 58 on this current tankful :)

  • I came into this thread hoping there was a car eating at a cafe called 'loynmore diesel'.

    Disappointing.
