Hi everyone,
Firstly apologies if this is in the wrong place.
I am looking to buy a hand held device to keep dogs from approaching me - this may sound strange, but I have a real phobia and am very scared of dogs (following a childhood incident).
I have googled this and found a couple of products, but was just wondering if anyone can recomend a particular device/website.
Any help much appreciated.

I will be watching this one with interest as my DS is petrifeid of dogs and will run out into the road to avoid them. Grrr why don't people keep their dogs on a lead (sorry)Credit Card Debt

Please have a de-sensitizing course. As a dog-owner myself I keep my dog on a lead mostly but if you react to a dog you will most likely scare/excite the dog and then it may jump up. So many dogs in UK I honestly think your life would improve if you got to know a dog or two and lessened your fear. Not denigrating you in any way as I am petrified of insects ( which is ridiculous based on size) but would hope that you could lessen your fear.Never let your sucesses go to your head and never let your failures go to your heart.:beer:0

Unfortunately a device would never work for you, Dogs can detect your fears, and being pack animals will be automatically dominant towards you as they would see you as an inferior being.
You would be better trying to overcome your phobia and study some dog psychology.
Try a google search for Cesar Milan, he has some great tips, and a TV show on SKY 3, he worked with a postwoman, the other day, who had been bitten, and he proved that the dog owners and the postwoman had a part to play, daft as it sounds her fearful body language fuelled the dogs aggression and anxiety.
I wish you well.0 -
A rather large alsatian chased me once, baring its teeth and growling like mad. I was absolutely petrified so I know where you're coming from.
How did I stop it? I turned round and kicked it in the face as hard as possible - twice. It went off with its tail between its legs (no pun intended) and when the owner started having a go at me I simply called the police. He soon disappeared with the dog on a leash.0 -
A friend of mine suffers from a similar phobia, she now keeps a can of hairspray in her handbag, she plans to "spray" the dog when it approaches."Do not look back and grieve over the past, for it is gone, and do not be troubled about the future, for it has yet to come. Live in the present, and make it so beautiful that it will be worth remembering"0

Combine it with a lighter and it'll certainly do the trick
(I'm not a dog lover as you may have guessed!)0 -
Surely spraying things on the dog will only make it worse.
I keep my dogs on leads but there are some ignorants out there, its a reflection on todays society.Always on the hunt for a bargain0 -
Thanks everyone for your response.
anglojock it's no joke and anyone with any kind of phobia will understand, however I find people tend to think it's ok to be scared of spiders/snakes etc but if I say I'm scared of dogs some people look at me as if I have just grown an extra head!
I find the majority of dog owners are very responsible and keep their dogs on leads or call them away if I explain my fear but there are some that take offence to a polite request and recently on my way home from work this man became quite hostile when I asked him to call his dog away.
I am seriously looking into trying to overcome this phobia, but it will take time and so in the mean time would a device be a waste of money?
