Time before losing NCD?

I've have been driving under my own insurance policy for the past 4 year but having now moved to London, I don't have a need for a car. Will my NCD persist indefinitely if I am not on my own insurance policy or do I lose it and if so in what time frame?
I'm conisdering getting insurance on my parent's car just to keep my NCD!

No, unfortunately you won't be able to keep/use your NCD indefinitely. After 18 months I believe it will no longer be 'valid' .
That said however, since you're getting a company car if, in the future you need to take out motor insurance a number of companies will count years claim free driving your company car and offer a discount equivalent to the number of NCD years you would have had.
Hope this kind of makes sense?0 -
Thanks for the reply. Where is the 18 month figure coming from?
I'm not getting a company car, I just think that keeping a car in London is more hassle than it's worth so I'm selling it.0 -
There is a time limit on NCD because there's a gap in cover. If you, for example, sold your car today and in 2009 expected to make use of your NCD from Oct 2007, they're going to want to know what you did in the last 2 years in terms of driving as there will be a gap.
I don't know where the 18mths came from.....except that some companies may accept NCD proof that is within a year or more from the end of a person's policy.0 -
I've worked within IT in the Insurance Broking Industry and (briefly!) in insurance itself for the last 8 years or so...
18 months is just the time period I've always heard from clients / colleagues - you may find some brokers accept NCD older than this although I wouldn't have thought many would....
Don't know where I got the company car thing from..... been a long day
Just had a quick scoot around a few companies sites for you ie. Direct Line, Esure, Swinton will accept up to two years from the point the policy was cancelled - doesn't look like there's anyone accepting older than that though (although I could be wrong).0 -
It varies from one company to the next. Three years ago my wife sold her car, but LV said her NCB would remain live for four years. She bought a car last year and LV provided confirmation of her NCB to her new insurer.0

The "usual" time limit is 2 years from the date of expiry/cancellation of last motor policy. Some insurers will accept up to 3 years after expiry especially if you return to previous carrier. I've not heard of anyone accepting full entitlement over 3 years but these days insurers will do allsorts to pick up the business.0
