Win 10 Quality updates failing to install on a DELL PC

I'm trying to help a neighbour with this. They have a Dell PC and they're annoyed by the constant messages that appear telling them that an update failed to install. Here's a quick list of what I did.
Checked Settings/Update and Security and saw two or three Quality updates failed (but not all of them - some had installed OK and a feature update had installed OK on 30/12/2017).
Ran Settings/Update and Security/Troubleshoot/Windows Update which removed failed updates and tried again, failed. (Can't remember the exact message).
Rang helpdesk which neighbour called (don't know who - PC bought from PC World). They took me through exactly the same Troubleshoot/Windows Update process and this time it appeared to work. Somehow it got further than my earlier try.
Went back into Update and Security and clicked Check for Updates. It began downloading KB4089848 and I left them to it.
Came home and checked my own Toshiba laptop and saw that I didn't have that update, checked for it and it downloaded and installed OK.
Spoke to neighbour this morning and found that it had failed to install. They had rung the help desk again who had taken remote control of the PC. Told neighbour something about lack of memory and having to pay to get it fixed which doesn't seem right at all (PC bought last November). This story is not too clear to me - I need to speak to them again.
They're running Avast.
Any thoughts on what to try folks? They're probably more concerned about the pestering messages than the failed updates.

You are not alone in having install problems.

I wouldn't trust pc world to come up with an answer.
Start with a search on Google and see other responses to this issue to give you some guidance.0 -
Thanks guys.
Having read a few posts and articles, the general advice seems to consist of various methods of removing the 'faulty' updates and trying again, akin to power off and on again (for other types of problem).
Is that it? No getting to the heart of the problem? Even if I could use these methods and get the latest updates installed, what's to say it won't happen in future?
Perhaps the neighbours habit of powering off their PC and Router each evening is contributing to this? I tend to put my Laptop in standby when not being used and I leave the Router on (for best performance). Updates have never been a problem.0
