Speed Awareness Course - Admiral

  • I called Admiral today and they only asked about convictions or pending prosecutions so I said no. Once I had my revised renewal quote, I asked about speed awareness courses in the interests of full disclosure because my renewal email had asked about them.

The agent said they had changed their policy Yesterday (4th Sept) and no longer asked about them. She also said they had ceased using info about them to affect premiums in December.

Interesting - I took out a policy on behalf of my wife on Friday (7th) and before pressing the final 'accept & pay' button was referred to contact them by phone if any of the insured has attended a Driver Awareness Course - on disclosure that I had a £20 loading was applied

From the current admiral online application form :
In the last 5 years, has the driver had any motoring offences, including fixed penalties, convictions, driver awareness courses or disqualifications, or any pending prosecutions?

    I'm not questioning anyone!

It seems the admiral website has not been updated.

Hence me quoting what it says there

It seems from ricard they only just changed their policy earlier this week.

So if the website has still not been updated when applying, then going ricard's way if you don't want to disclose a course looks the route to take
  • Bump - just to advise that I believe Admiral have removed this from their renewal criteria:

    2018 year renewal
Motoring Offences : Have you or any driver been involved in any motoring offences in the last 5 years, including fixed penalties,
convictions, driver awareness courses or disqualifications or have any pending prosecution other than those listed?

    2019 renewal
Motoring Offences : Have you or any driver been involved in any motoring offences in the last 5 years, including fixed penalties,
convictions, disqualifications or have any pending prosecution other than those listed?
  • Hello! Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I’m just about to renew with admiral having gone on a speed awareness course since the last renewal. I understand they used to specifically ask about speed awareness courses however the wording now is as Crypticc says above. Would “being involved in a motoring offence” include going on a speed awareness course? I think it probably would, so I need to disclose it. It’s a different question to “being convicted of any motoring offences”, perhaps just a sneaky way of asking if you’ve been on any speed awareness courses without directly asking. Thoughts appreciated as I’m in two minds what to do!

Insurers have a duty to ask clear questions and "Have you been involved in any motoring offences" is a ridiculously unclear question. The other day I was involved in a motoring offence - I noticed that I was doing 35mph in a built up area and quickly slowed down. Read literally Admiral's question would require me to disclose that fact. Obviously I am not going to.

If the question goes on to specifically mention fixed penalties, convictions and disqualifications but doesn't mention speed awareness courses then I think the natural reading is that it is not asking about speed awareness courses, any more than it is asking about that time you did 80mph on a motorway without being caught.
