Hi all, I have an old pc and bb internet access.I want to use skype but for some time now I have had no sound at all- nothing. Can anyone tell me how to check if the sound card is us or something else wrong? And if I decide to download Skype will the lack of sound affect the calls -I know this might sound obvious but any help would be appreciated.

start, run, devmgmt.msc
do you have any yellow question marks, or does the soundcard show up?
Do you have a volume control icon bottom right, if so, check that nothing is muted.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
if you are calling another pc using skype, you can just use the chat facility. The person calling you would need to initiate a chat. My son sometimes calls me when I have the speakers turned off and he types Beep beep into the chat console which then comes up in a little box at the bottom of the screen. We prefer to type to each other as we only have a microphone on one pc and we conference chat. Also its handy because you can save the chat to read again.0

You could still use Skype even if your soundcard is dead, but it does require you to get a USB headset or a USB 'phone rather than one with the usual 3.5mm plugs; usually USB headsets (which don't have to be too expensive) have their own sound processor built in, which can mean improved sound quality, as well as taking pressure off the internal sound card.
Au Res.,

I want to get Skype. Would someone please talk me through the process?
I have a PC with broadband connection. I downloaded the Skype software from the website. Now I have a Skype icon on my desktop. Also my computer opens to 2 Skype screens. One says sign in. The other says create a new Skpe account. It lists:
Full Name
Choose Skype Name
Password.
I'm confused by the first two. Will my Full Name be shown to all users? Or will they see my Skype name? Will I risk hoax calls if I show my name? What do Skype users tend to do? I want my friends to be able to find me.
Also, My computer has sound coming from a built-in speaker in the monitor. Do I need a microphone? If I add a webcam, will it slow my computer (XP) down?
Thanks in advance.;)0 -
you need to create an account to use skype. You can use any name it doesnt have to be your name. So a fun name or whatever will do but the other info must be real. You dont need to have ear phones but if you want to talk back, you need a microphone.
Dont know about the webcam though...0 -
Not sure I've done this right.
I put in my full name where asked. Then I put in a user name where asked. Once I was registered I could than see the other users. They mostly have a user name and a nickname for full name as well, whereas my full name is visible to everyone.
It doesn't seem to let you amend your username or full name or even your town.
I was hoping to find my friends but the search did not show them.
