I'd take an Astra over a Note, but not with the 1.4 engine. It's underpowered in the Astra and not particularly reliable.

I'd be looking at an Astra and a Focus, both with 1.6 engines - test drive both and see which you prefer.
You can have results or excuses, but not both.

  • Get the new shape note 1.2 DiG-S engine. Zero VED and a great wee car, very nippy.

Both of these models have timing chains which is handy.

Our absolute max budget is £4k.

    What do we want?
    - 5 doors
    - reliable
    - cheapish to run
    - enough space for a buggy in the boot and an extended-rear facing car seat in the back.

I know there are no guarantees with used car but just want something that'll last us 3 or 4 years. We do about 8k miles a year.
Don't touch anything vauxhall with a timing chain. Put in google astra timing chain noise.

We are needing a new family friendly car after our 2004 small hatchback has become uneconomical to repair.
Which of these two cars would you go for an why? Both are £4000.
    1) 2011 Vauxhall Astra (old design). Basic spec. Full dealer service history, one family owner, 62k miles. New mot and service. 1.4litre.
    2) 2012 Nissan Note. Top spec. Full service history. 2 owners. 72k mile. New mot , service and brake pads. 1.4litre.

I'd be grateful for your opinions!
    Thankyou

How much would it cost to repair the 2004 car? Surely it can't be as much as the first years depreciation on either of those two options.

you do realise the OP isn't buying new, or even nearly new don't you?
  • Neither. I'd rather die than live with the back pain an Astra would cause me, and a Nissan Note would be like suicide in itself. I'd buy a Volvo estate and be comfortable.
