Default on Callcredit - action recommended?

Hi folks, myself and my partner are looking to buy in North London and have had an offer accepted on a nice flat. We're doing the mortgage through L&C, did a few AIP's and all was good. We checked out credit scores on Experian / Clearscore (441 score :T), all clear, but! - we just got refused a mortgage from Sainsburies Mortgages
Basically my partner has an old default on their file - it's from 5 years 3 months ago, early 2013. But this default only shows up on Callcredit / Noddle. If we apply for other mortgages, are they likely to run credit checks with multiple agencies, or do they have a favourite?
And will trying our luck against multiple mortgages hurt our credit scores in the long run?
I assume paying off the default now won't help - if we're going down that route we may as well just wait 9 months for it to disappear off the file? Also, waiting 9 months might be wise anyway given the current London property market - any thoughts?

What has your broker advised?
If you pay the default today, it can take up to a month to show as satisfied, but it may be a lot quicker.
Your broker is the one who should be advising you on this sort of thing as they know your circumstances far better than we do.
Making multiple applications will affect your score, 2-3 should not be the end of the world, but you need to be confident they will get accepted.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a mortgage adviser, so you need to take my word for it.
