Do the witnesses of a uk will have to be present in the uk when signing?

As long as they witness the testator signing the will it does not matter, but you should only use UK residence as witness in case of a challenge where the witness may need to testify in court.0

Should add that unless the will is very simple, or involves assets held outside the UK, it makes sense for a UK resident to make their will in the UK, with a solicitor who understands UK law. Of course, that may not be practical if the person is very ill.
I know that one family member had 3 wills - one for each country where he owned assets!0
