HMRC tribunal hearing, by paper or attendance???

hello, just looking for some advice

i am appealing a HMRC tax credits decision. and it is going to be with an independent tribunal.
i literally have no idea what i am doing.
i am going to seek advice from citizens advice for this, but i just wanted to know if there are others who have appealed against a decision and if they have done the appeal by paper or by attending the tribunal? and if so what was the out come? and what do you think is the best approach?
i am a very anxious person and suffer with anxiety so i would prefer to do it by paper, but if its helps my chances to attend then i will do that.

thanks for any responses
