Garden wall quote

Options
Hi,

Can someone tell me if this quote is fair? I have a small hedge on my front yard that I want swapping for a wall. My hedge is roughly just above the knee (haven't got measurements to hand but we aren't talking a 6ft row of conifers....)

The wall will 3ft high and the pillars 4ft - Length of the wall is just above 23ft

the quote is:

To remove existing front garden hedge, dig and concrete a secure stable foundation and build a 7.2mx0.9m wall out of a red frost proof facing brick including 4 larger brick pillars in spacing's suitable for steel railing to be fitted. (Supplied by client)
Quote Total:
Total price = £2100
Deposit @40% = £840
Payment on completion = £1260

Thanks in advance

    Depends where you are I think. Just had the following quote through and I'm up in the Midlands;
remove existing hedge and dispose of waste products
dig out footings to British standard 450mm and dispose of waste
supply and fit concrete footings, approx 2 cubic
supply& build new double skin wall. Approx 10 linear meters h.1.5m.
Total cost £1310 inclusive. 15% upfront and rest upon completion.
From a trusted builder that I've used before.

Doesn't seem far off the mark to me based on materials and labour, if they're fitting railings too.
The 40% deposit does sound alarm bells though. Had a few builders go to the wall with deposits recently.
Its a small job and doesn't seem like there is justification for so much up front.
If he's worried about paying for materials, you could always offer to pay for them direct, ordering them to your house.

  • I've had 2 more people out for quotes, just waiting on them to get back to me. He wasn't bothered about taking a deposit, it was me who said I'd rather pay something to make sure I was booked in (had a few cowboys....) but I thought it would have been like 20% :)

I'll let you know what others come back with - thanks for the replies
